Doocey slams decision not to provide a legacy for shooting

4.00.00pm GMT Fri 20th Mar 2009

Dee Doocey, the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Olympics Spokesperson, has strongly criticised the decision by the Olympic Board that shooting events will be held at a temporary venue in Woolwich.

Everyone involved in the sport in the UK wants the shooting to be at Bisley because it would leave a lasting legacy for future generations. But instead the shooting will take place using temporary facilities at the Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich which will be demolished at the end of the Games.

Dee Doocey said:

"This is a huge waste of taxpayers money and is the latest in a growing list of legacy promises which will now not materialise.

"The Games will cost taxpayers £9.3 billion. This money was never meant to cover six weeks of sport - Londoners were promised a permanent Olympics legacy in terms of sporting provision and other wider benefits.

"But one by one these legacy promises are being disregarded and the Mayor's plan to set up a Legacy Board without a budget adds insult to injury.

"This decision is a huge setback for everyone who is committed to ensuring that there is a permanent Olympic legacy for UK sport."
