MEPs call for increased humanitarian aid for Gaza3.28.00pm GMT Fri 20th Feb 2009 MEPs have called in a resolution for increased immediate and unhindered humanitarian aid to the population of Gaza, with full opening of the border crossings. They also want a detailed damage assessment and the payment of salaries, pensions and allowances for the most vulnerable. The resolution also recognises however that sustainable reconstruction and development requires a durable ceasefire underpinned by serious peace negotiations between Israel and Palestinians. Liberal Democrat London MEP Sarah Ludford said: "It is vital that the humanitarian effort and eventual reconstruction in Gaza are able to proceed swiftly and efficiently. This means Israel must open the crossings and end restrictions on allowable goods but also that Hamas must stop stealing the aid, as accused by the UN, and end the arms smuggling which Israel legitimately sees as a barrier to free movement of goods." "A sustainable ceasefire, the release of Israeli soldier Gilat Shalit and movement regarding Palestinian prisoners are not only necessary in themselves but also in order to facilitate an end to civilian suffering. But a final end to this complex conflict can only come through an urgently required resumption of peace talks." "There are questions about the actions of both the Israeli forces and Hamas. Claims that the use of white phosphorous by the IDF breached legal restrictions and that Israel committed war crimes must be independently investigated. But so must Amnesty's charge sheet against Hamas of abductions, killings, torture and death threats perpetrated against their own fellow Palestinians."
