Responding to the statement by MEP Renate Sommer, European Parliament rapporteur on food labelling, that press reports saying her food labelling proposals would ban selling eggs by the dozen were 'erroneous', London Liberal Democrat MEP Sarah Ludford said:
"It's good to have that confirmation now that selling eggs by the dozen is not affected, but it's a pity that a muddle had been created and fears aroused by obscure wording."
"Any rules to do with the selling of food is sensitive for consumers as well as potentially costly for businesses - think of the metric/imperial measurements issue - so maximum clarity at an early stage is imperative."
"And while Mrs Sommer has commented on eggs, she has not confirmed that bread rolls can also still be sold in supermarkets in packs such as 4 or 6 and will not also have to show the total weight."
