Commenting on William Hague's announcement that the coalition government is to set up an inquiry into British intelligence services' alleged collusion in torture post-9/11, Liberal Democrat European justice & human rights spokeswoman, Sarah Ludford said:
"This inquiry has the potential to once and for all bare the truth and provide accountability regarding Britain's post-9/11 human rights record. It will allow us to finally come to terms with what happened, and hopefully move on."
"But the aim must be to achieve maximum possible disclosure. The inquiry must be held in public - or else it will not be worth our time."
Sarah Ludford was vice-chair of the European Parliament's inquiry 3 years ago into European collusion in extraordinary rendition and torture, and joined a number of leading NGOs in March of this year in putting forward a concrete proposal for a judicial inquiry here in the UK. She added:
"I am pleased to see our coalition government taking action on pledges made by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats prior to the election. This shows a real desire to turn a new leaf in our foreign and counter-terrorism policy."
