Questions must be answered over LOCOG's harvesting of personal data - Dee Doocey

Dee Doocey, the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Olympics spokesperson, commenting on today's launch of a new website by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) said:

"Inviting people to register their interest in specific sporting events for the 2012 Games makes sense because the organisers need this information to inform their ticketing strategy. However the information being collected by Ticketmaster on behalf of LOCOG goes well beyond this purpose, or what is necessary to keep people updated about the 2012 Games.

"There is no reason to make it mandatory for people expressing an interest in the Games to have to provide their address, phone number and their age. Most of the information they are asking for is totally unnecessary to keep people updated. The information they are harversting is gold dust and would be worth a fortune if it had to be obtained in the commercial market.

"I have written to LOCOG asking them to instruct Ticketmaster to cease collecting anything other than the minimum information necessary for their ticketing strategy."
