Commenting on the controversy surrounding a vote by Euro-MPs about labelling of eggs in shops, London Liberal Democrat MEP Sarah Ludford said:
"Liberal Democrat MEPs and our continental allies in the European Parliament put forward an amendment to exclude eggs - and other foods like bread rolls sold by number - from the requirement to label by total pack weight. It's clearly nonsense to add more red tape and expense for producers with no benefit to shoppers perfectly happy buying '6 large' or '4 wholemeal'."
"Those MEPs who defeated our amendment need their head examining. There are plenty of genuine consumer rip-offs to tackle - like excess mobile roaming charges where we've done good work. Let's concentrate on real priorities."
"The recent vote was only an interim one. The ball is now in the court of EU governments. I urge the UK government to push for a common sense exemption for eggs, rolls etc, so that when the draft law comes back to the European Parliament for sign-off we can get a better result."
