Commenting on the eighth anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks on the twin towers in New York, Liberal Democrat European justice & human rights spokeswoman Sarah Ludford MEP, recently appointed vice-chair of the European Parliament's delegation to the United States, said:
"Eight years on, the outrage at these horrific attacks does not lessen. But the world has learnt that the 'war on terror' approach is not the way to deter terrorists or secure justice, which only adherence to the rule of law can provide."
"The UK this week saw the successful conviction of the three terrorists who conspired to blow up transatlantic planes using liquid bombs, simultaneously with the collapse of the government's controversial programme of 'control orders' which punishes people without charge, trial or knowledge of the evidence against them. Clearly the normal criminal law is more effective in tackling and revenging terrorism."
"President Obama has taken the first steps towards closing Guantanamo Bay and made a vow to end torture. As vice-chair of the US delegation I will help progress joint transatlantic action in justice and security, but invoking this lesson that justice is more efficient when sought within the correct legal framework."
