Ready to meet the public
Enfield Liberal Democrats hosted a stall at this year's Enfield Town Autumn Show. During the two-day event we were fortunate enough to have both fantastic weather and a large public turnout. We discussed a range of issues with local residents, including state pension entitlements being means tested to the detriment of those who have prudently planned for their retirement, concerns regarding people avoiding income tax through off-shore payments and the thriving local black economy were but a few.
We also used the show as an opportunity to raise signatures for the Liberal Democrat campaign "Axe the Tax". Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake will be handing the completed petitions, collected from all over the UK, into the Department for Communities and Local Government in a bid to put pressure on the Labour Government. We want to scrap the unfair Council Tax and replace it with a fair system based on ability to pay.
What a waste!
However, there was one disappointment. On such a warm day there were a huge amount of drinks consumed, the bins provided were overflowing with plastic bottles and empty cans. But there were absolutely no facilities to recycle rubbish. Considering the Tory Council's supposed commitment to recycling and their promise to advance it through 2006 this was a serious error. What made the situation even more ridiculous was the fact that the council recycling stand headed the show! They were giving out literature and recycling boxes to help encourage residents - they even had a dustcart with them! Yet they hadn't been approached by the show's organisers to help! They were just as distraught as we were.
We are looking forward to being present at next year's Autumn Show, we just hope that the Council insist on recycling at this great local event.
