Tony Blair's plans to force everyone to have an ID card linked to a giant national database will be a complete waste of money according to Enfield Liberal Democrats' spokesperson Rob Lambie.
Most experts, including ex-MI5 Cheif Stella Rimington, have stated that ID cards will not stop terrorism - the original reason for Labour wanting to introduce the card.
The government now says that the total cost of the cards will be nearly £6 billion - that's nearly twice what they forecast when the idea was first proposed in 2002. Some independent experts claim the likely total cost will rise to nearer £20 billion.
Lib Dems say that this money would be much better spent recruiting more police and investing in measures that will have a real effect in cutting crime.
Anybody applying for a card, which will almost certainly become compulsory, will have to pay at least £60 out of his or her own pocket. Council Tax may increase as Councils are forced to make their systems ID card compliant.
