AMs are holding an investigation into plans to get more Londoners walking

Plans to get more Londoners walking are to be scrutinised by the London Assembly's Transport Committee which wants to hear from Londoners about their experiences and what would help persuade them to make more journeys by foot.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has said 2011 will be his "year of walking" and in his Transport Strategy has said he wants to see the share of all journeys made on foot increase to 25 per cent by 2031.

Transport Committee member Caroline Pidgeon AM, who is leading the investigation, said: "There are real benefits to getting people walking, especially when you consider that Londoners make more than a million trips of less than a kilometre by car every day. I want to identify the best ways to make it easier and safer for Londoners to walk instead, not just next year but in the longer-term."

As part of the investigation the Committee is asking Londoners to chair their views on what would encourage them to make more journeys on foot.
